PHOEBE (pronounced FEE-bee) is the Greek Goddess of light. She is one of the Titans, daughter of Gaia and Ouranos, and sister-wife to another Titan, Koios, God of intelligence. Phoebe was also the Goddess of earth-based prophecies, most notably the oracle at Delphi. She was the third Goddess to have charge of Delphi, after Gaia and Themis. With Koios, Phoebe had two daughters, Leto (Goddess of the oracles of the day) and Asteria (Goddess of the oracles of the night). Leto in turn was the mother of Artemis and Apollo, and Phoebe passed the care of the Delphic oracle to Apollo. Her name was also used as epithets for the twins. Phoebe, as a Goddess of light, later became associated with the moon and more particularly with the Goddess Selene, who was the moon personified. Phoebe's name, which means "bright," is also seen as PHOIBE, and the epithets GOLD-CROWNED and GOLDEN-WREATHED were used for her.

Ushas Hindu Goddess Of The Dawn Image
"USHAS" IS THE HINDU GODDESS OF THE DAWN; SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF DYAUS, THE SKY, AND THE SISTER OF AGNI AND INDRA. SHE WEARS A GOLD VEIL AND RED ROBES AS SHE RIDES A CHARIOT ACROSS THE SKY EACH MORNING...BRINGING LIGHT INTO THE WORLD.BUT, SHE IS NOT THE SUN; IN FACT, USHAS RISES IN THE DARK WHEN HER MOTHER BEGINS THE PROCESS OF ADORNING HER. HER SISTER, THE NIGHT, LENDS THE MAGIC WHICH ALLOWS USHAS TO LOOK AT EVERYONE AT THE SAME TIME. USHAS IS FRIENDLY AND A GIVER OF WEALTH TO ALL PEOPLE, AND SINCE SHE ALWAYS PRECEDES THE LIGHT, SHE IS ALSO CALLED A MOTHER GODDESS.

THE SUN CATCHES SIGHT OF THE LOVELY YOUNG MAIDEN AS SHE PASSES BY AND FALLS MADLY IN LOVE; HE BEGINS TO CHASE HER. SHE SMILES, PLEASED WITH HIS AFFECTIONS AND BEGINS TO SPREAD HER LOVE AND LIGHT ACROSS THE SKY...BRINGING A NEW DAY FOR MANKIND...AND AS HER CHARIOT PASSES OVERHEAD, THE BIRDS BEGIN THEIR MORNING SONGS. THIS MORNING I WAS AWAKEN AT 5:15 AM TO THE SOUNDS OF THE JOYOUS SONGS OF THE BIRDS AS THEY GREETED THE NEW DAY. I SMILED, REMINDED THAT USHAS HAD JUST PASSED, AND WENT BACK TO SLEEP.

THE MYTHS PORTRAY USHAS AS A SHY MAIDEN, VERY CONSCIOUS OF HER BEAUTY BUT A MODEST YOUNG WOMAN WHO IS ENTERING SOCIETY UNDER THE PROTECTION OF HER MOTHER. AND IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT, EVEN MYTHOLOGY, IS FASCINATED WITH THE CHAUVINIST MODEL FOR OVER THOUSANDS OF YEARS THE READERS OF THE VEDAS HAVE DRAWN GREAT PLEASURE FROM THIS TALE OF THE SHY MAIDEN FOLLOWED BY THE MACHO SUN...AND FINALLY HER SURRENDER.

"IF YOU HAPPEN TO AWAKEN AND CATCH THE LIFE JUST BEFORE THE SUN APPEARS, BE SURE TO GREET HER. HER NAME IS USHAS, AND SHE IS THE GODDESS OF THE DAWN."

Monday's Goddess~ Weiben Frauen
Themes~ Banishing; Blessing; Joy; Protection; Fertility; Divination Symbols~ Any Sacred Symbol; Forest Items; White

About Weiben Frauen~ Known as "White Woman" of the German forests, this goddess is said to have been worshipped by ancient pagans and witches where she lived--in the woods. In later times, people looked to her to predict the future, help with matters of fertility, and protect the land.

To Do Today ~ This unique festival dates back to pagan worship of the grove goddess (and pagan gatherings in the woodlands). Traditionally, some type of sacred symbol is dug up and carried around town to renew blessings and happiness in all who see it. The ritual also banishes evil influences. To follow this custom, plant a white stone or token in a flowerpot, garden, or lawn this year, and next year dig it up temporarily to release White Woman's power. At the end of the day, return the token to the earth so she can protect your home or land and fill every corner of it with magic. Repeat this annually to continue the cycle!

Wear something white today to invite Weiben Frauen's protection on the figurative land of your spirit, and spend some time in the company of trees at some point. Meditate on the pagans, who weaved magic in such places, and on this goddess, who empowered the spells. As you do, listen closely to the voices of the trees and see if they have a message for you.
