HYBLA is the Sicel Goddess of nature. The Sicels were the original inhabitants of Sicily, and we know of their deities through Greek explorers and writers. Hybla was worshipped on hills in Sicily which had unusual natural phenomena, such as a volcano and mineral springs. The hills were also home to bees that produced some of the finest honey known to the ancient world. Hybla's name was also seen as HYBLAEA, and she became syncretized with the Roman Goddess Venus, who took on the name VENUS VICTRIX HYBLENSIS.

"ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE PROVES THAT THE GODDESS RELIGION EXISTED AND FLOURISHED IN THE NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF THE PATRIARCHAL ABRAHAM, FIRST PROPHET OF THE MALE DEITY YAHWEH. I FIND IT ALL SO VERY FASCINATING. I AM SO IN AWE OF ANCIENT MAN."
THE GODDESS OF LAUSSEL WAS FOUND IN 1911 IN FRANCE AT THE ENTRANCE TO HER CEREMONIAL CAVE WHICH WAS BOTH A DWELLING PLACE AND A CEREMONIAL SITE. SHE IS AN EARTH MOTHER, AND IS REGARDED ONE THE EARLIEST KNOWN DEPICTION OF THE IDEA OF A DIETY FOR THE PURPOSE OF WORSHIP, THE VERY FIRST EXAMPLE OF THE DEIFICATION OF THE FEMININE PRINCIPLE, THE ORIGINAL GREAT MOTHER GODDESS. INDEED, THE GODDESS OF LAUSSEL IS DATED BETWEEN 22,000 AND 18,000 B.C.E.
SHE WAS PAINTED RED, THE COLOR OF MENSTRUATION....THE COLOR OF LIFE, BLOOD AND REBIRTH. IN HER LEFT HAND, SHE POINTS TO HER SWOLLEN BELLY, BUT HER LOOK IS TURNED TO HER RIGHT HAND WHICH SHE HOLDS A BISON HORN WHICH IS SHAPED LIKE A CRESCENT MOON...IMPLYING A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HER FERTILITY AND THE LUNAR PHASES OF THE MOON. THE HORN IS MARKED WITH 13 INCISIONS CALLING TO MIND THE 13 DAYS OF THE WAXING MOON AND THE 13 MOONS OF THE LUNAR YEAR. HER FACE IS FEATURELESS, ALLOWING SPACE FOR EACH ONE OF US TO EMBODY HER. WE CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE SENSE OF WONDER THAT ANCIENT MAN MUST HAVE FELT AS THEY WATCHED THE "GREAT MOTHE"R GIVE BIRTH....THUS, CONFIRMING WITH EACH CHILD THE MAGIC AND MYSTERY OF LIFE ONGOING.
