The name of the Goddess Venus has also been given to the second planet from the Sun. This association may have been made because of the brilliant appearance of the planet which is among the most beautiful of the Celestial objects. Ironically,even though She is beloved by the Romans who saw Venus as the planet of love and adorned Her with roses, the Mayans and the Aztecs of America saw the planet Venus differently; indeed, they connected Her with violence. They believed that when Venus goes retrograde, She turns into a man, gets seduced by the goddess of love, and fathers a sea monster as a child. Then, the story goes, because he lost in a ritual game, he must be sacrificed by the sun. Afterwards, he is reborn again as a She. (I know, pretty confusing, but Mesoamerican astrology is fascinating). This same sequence was mirrored by the Mesoamericans through real life completion, warfare, and human blood sacrifices which led to fertility rites.
