AIRMED WAS THE IRISH GODDESS OF MEDICINE AND HEALING, AN ANCIENT CELTIC GODDESS WITH GREAT SKILLS. SHE RULES OVER MAGIC, HEALING, LEARNING, AND WITCHCRAFT. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF THE TUATHA PHYSICIAN, CIAN CECHT, THE GOD OF MEDICINE WHO REPLACED THE SEVERED ARM OF THE TUATHA KING, NUADA, WITH ONE OF SILVER. TOGETHER, WITH HIS DAUGHTER, HE GUARDED THE SACRED WELL OF HEALING. HER BROTHER, MIACH, WAS ALSO A SKILLED HEALER...AND SOME SAID HIS POWERS EXCEEDED THOSE OF HIS FATHER.

AS THE STORY GOES, MIACH AND AIRMED REGENERATED NUADA'S FLESH ARM TO PERFECT HEALTH BECAUSE, IN IRELAND, A KING HAD TO BE IN PERFECT HEALTH IN ORDER TO RULE. DIAN CECHT WAS A JEALOUS GOD WHO WAS ESPECIALLY JEALOUS OF HIS SON. AND, BECAUSE HE COULD NOT COMPETE WITH MIACH'S SURGICAL SKILLS, HE SLAY HIM. AIRMED, DEEPLY GRIEVING, WENT TO HER BROTHER'S GRAVE AND LAID A CAIRN OF STONES AROUND THE BURIAL PLOT, AND SOON THEREAFTER, SHE DISCOVERED NEW LIFE RISING FROM THE EARTH. 365 HERBS WERE GROWING ON THAT SPOT, EACH ONE FOR A SPECIFIC PART OF THE BODY.

THEN, AIRMED SPREAD HER CLOAK AND COLLECTED THOSE HERBS ACCORDING TO THEIR PROPERTIES, BUT WHEN SHE HAD ALL OF THE HERBS GATHERED CAREFULLY WITHIN HER CLOAK, DIAN CECHT CAME AND TURNED IT OVER, MIXING THEM UP SO THAT THEIR APPLICATION WOULD NOT BE KNOWN. THUS, HER FATHER TOLD HER, HUMANS WILL NEVER KNOW THE SECRETS OF IMMORTALITY.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR ANSWERS IN HERBAL HEALING, ASK AIRMED FOR SHE WILL OFTEN HELP THOSE WHO ASK. WE CAN CELEBRATE THIS GREAT GODDESS BY APPRECIATING NATURE AND THE GIFT OF PLANT MEDICINE.
