"ASHNAN "(LADY OF ABUNDANCE) WAS THE SUMARIAN GODDESS OF GRAIN, LIKE MOST OF THE GRAIN GODDESSES, SHE WAS A VERY OLD DEITY WHO APPEARED SOMEWHERE AROUND 2900 BCE. ASHNAN HAD A VERY STRONG PRESENCE IN THE ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIAN WRITINGS. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF ENLIL, THE GOD OF THE AIR.

ASHNAN IS BOTH AN AGRICULTURAL AND A DOMESTIC GODDESS. SHE IS VIEWED AS THE PROTECTOR AND NOURISHER OF THE FERTILE LANDS AND PROVIDES HER PEOPLE WITH GRAINS AND VEGETATION. SHE IS USUALLY DEPICTED AS A YOUNG MAIDEN WITH EARS OF CORN SPROUTING FROM HER SHOULDERS.

ANOTHER OF HER ROLES WAS TO PROVIDE FOOD AND CLOTHING TO THE GODS OF MESOPOTAMIA, BUT WHEN THE HEAVENLY CREATURES WERE FOUND UNABLE TO USE HER PRODUCTS, HUMANKIND WAS CREATED TO TAKE THEIR PLACE.

Goddess Tiamat

Goddess Tiamat Image
TIAMAT is the Babylonian Goddess of the primeval saltwater sea. In the beginning there was only Tiamat and Apsu, God of the freshwater. Tiamat surrounded Apsu, and their waters mingled to produce Lahmu and Lahamu, who in turn produced Anshar and Kishar. Anshar and Kishar mated to produce the God Anu, who was the father of the Gods Enlil and Ea (known as Enki in Sumerian).

The noise of all of her descendants bothered Tiamat, and Apsu wanted to kill them but Tiamat said no. However, Ea had overheard their plans, and he plotted to kill Apsu. In vengeance, Tiamat created an army of giant snakes and dragons to attack the younger Gods. Ea's son, Marduk, engaged in combat with Tiamat, and he used the four winds against her. When Tiamat swallowed the winds, her belly became very distended, and Marduk shot her with an arrow, slicing her in two. Marduk used Tiamat's body to form the sky and the earth. Her eyes were placed as the sources of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and her breasts became great mountains. Her last breath was transformed into the clouds.

Tiamat is usually depicted as a sea monster or great dragon. She is the Babylonian equivalent of the Sumerian Goddess Nammu. Her name, which means "sea," is also seen as TIAMET, and she was also known as UMMU-HUBUR or MOTHER HUBUR, which means "mother of noise."

SHE IS THE ULTIMATE DARK MAIDEN, THE ONE WHO NOT ONLY INSPIRES SIN, BUT ALSO CLEANSES IT AWAY FOR SHE IS A PURIFICATION GODDESS AS WELL...THE ONE WHO FORGIVES THE SINS AND MISDEEDS CAUSED BY OTHERS. SHE IS ALSO SAID TO BE A GODDESS OF THE EARTH, SEX, FERTILITY, AND CHILDBIRTH.

HER NAME IS DERIVED FROM THE NAHUATI WORD "TLAZOLLI "WHICH MEANS "OLD, DIRTY, AND DETERIORATED; IT WAS ALSO USED TO CONNOTE FILTH. THE SECOND PART OF HER NAME, "TEOTL, "SIGNIFIES A DEITY. HENCE, SHE IS THE DEITY OF FILTH.

SHE IS THOUGHT TO BE A PLURAL GODDESS AND IS ASSOCIATED WITH A FOUR-PART SISTERHOOD SAID TO REPRESENT FOUR SISTERS, EACH OF A DIFFERENT AGE AND NAMES

"XOCOTZIN "IS THE YOUNGEST OF THE SISTERS; SHE IS THE ADOLESCENT...INNOCENT IN SOME WAYS YET CRUEL AND UNRELIABLE IN OTHERS; YET MANY STILL CONSIDERED HER THE ADORABLE ONE.

"TLACO" IS THE YOUNG WOMAN, THE MAIDEN...SENSUAL AND FULL OF ADVENTURE...READY TO TEST HER WILD OATS AND THAT SHE DID FOR HER MORALITY IS SAID TO BE NON-EXISTENT.

"TEICU "IS THE SECOND ELDEST OF THE SISTERS. SHE IS THE WITCH GODDESS, THE ONE WHO PURIFIES THE SOULS OF THOSE WHO CONFESS. SHE IS ASSOCIATED WITH MENSTRUATION AND CHILDBIRTH; SHE BLESSES MARRIAGES AND BRINGS PEACE AND FERTILITY TO THE LAND.

"(TO THE RIGHT IS A STATUE OF TLAZOLTEOTL GIVING BIRTH. KIND OF SCARY LOOKING, ISN'T SHE? BUT A VERY, VERY POWERFUL GODDESS IN HER DAY.*)"

THE AZTECS INVOKED TLAZOLTEOTL AT A NEW BIRTH TO CLEANSE THE BAY OF HER PARENTS SINS, AND THE OLD AND TERMINALLY ILL WOULD SEEK HER OUT TO CONFESS THEIR SINS FOR SHE NOT ONLY ENCOMPASSES ILLICIT LOVE, OVERINDULGENCE, AND PROMISCUOUS BEHAVIOR, BUT ALSO IS THE PARDONER OF THOSE WHO ENGAGE IN HER EXCESSES. THIS ABSOLUTION...WHICH UNLIKE THE CHRISTIAN PRACTICE OF CONFESSION, COULD BE GIVEN ONLY ONCE IN A LIFETIME.

"*NOTE: WOMEN USUALLY SQUATTED WHILE GIVING BIRTH DURING THE DAYS OF THE AZTECS; HENCE, THE SQUATTING POSITION OF TLAZOLTEOTL."

Goddess Despoina

Goddess Despoina Image
SHE IS THE MYSTERIOUS DAUGHTER OF THE GREEK GODDESS, "DEMETER", THE DAUGHTER THAT WE RARELY HEAR OF. HER NAME MEANS "THE LADY. "ACCORDING TO MYTH, "I"T WAS WHEN" DEMETER" WAS TRAVELING TO ALL OF THE CORNERS OF THE EARTH IN SEARCH OF HER LOST DAUGHTER, "PERSEPHONE", (WHO HAD BEEN KIDNAPPED BY "HADES") THAT THE SEA GOD, "POSEIDON", CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF HER AND DESIRED TO MAKE "DEMETER "HIS. "DEMETER" DID EVERYTHING WITHIN HER POWER TO AVOID HIS LUSTFUL INTENTIONS, AND, EVENTUALLY EVEN DISGUISED HERSELF AS A MARE, HIDING AMONGST THE HERDS OF ARCADIA. BUT," POSEIDON" WAS NOT TO BE FOOLED AND TRANSFORMED HIMSELF INTO A STALLION TO CONTINUE THE PURSUIT. HE CAME ACROSS HER AS SHE HID AMONGST THE OTHER MARES AND HAD HIS WAY WITH HER. AND IT WAS FROM THIS UNION "DESPOINA" AND THE IMMORTAL HORSE, "ARION", WERE BORN.

SADLY, WE KNOW VERY LITTLE OF "DESPOINA." MANY DID NOT EVEN KNOW THAT SHE EXISTED. WE DO KNOW THAT SHE WAS A FERTILITY GODDESS AND AN UNDERWORLD DEITY WHOSE CHARACTER RESEMBLED "PERSEPHONE". SHE WAS WORSHIPPED ALONGSIDE HER MOTHER IN AN AKKADIAN MYSTERY CULT AS EVIDENCED BY THE ALTARS OF BOTH OF THE GODDESSES--"DESPOINA AND DEMETER"-- PLACED IN THE FRONT OF THE DORIAN TEMPLE OF "DESPOINA"; IN THE PORTICO, THERE WAS A TABLET WITH THE INSCRIPTIONS OF THE MYSTERIES. THERE WAS ALSO AN ALTAR OF "POSEIDON". IN HER SANCTUARY SHE RECEIVED MANY GIFTS FOR EVERYONE BROUGHT TO HER WHATEVER THEY HAD. BETWEEN THE OFFERINGS THE FRUITS OF ALL THE TREE--EXCEPT THE GRANATE APPLE--APPEARED AND ANIMALS WERE SACRIFICED TO HER HONOR.

THE TRUE NAME OF "DESPOINA" IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN ONLY KNOWN TO THOSE INITIATED INTO HER WORSHIP AT THE TEMPLE DEDICATED TO HER AT LYCOSURA IN ARCADIA, AND NONE OF THE INITIATES WERE ALLOWED TO PASS ON THAT KNOWLEDGE. HENCE, HER TRUE NAME HAS NOW BEEN LOST FOR ALL TIME. IT IS AMAZING TO CONSIDER JUST HOW MUCH OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY HAS BEEN LOST TO THE MODERN WORLD, AND ALTHOUGH THERE ARE MANY HUNDREDS OF STORIES, THE EARLIEST TALES WERE PASSED DOWN IN THE ORAL TRADITION. THUS STORIES HAVE BEEN LOST AND EVEN THE NAMES OF THESE GREAT GODDESSES ARE NOW UNKNOWN, JUST LIKE THE TRUE NAME OF "DESPOINA."

Goddess Hera

Posted by Unknown

Goddess Hera Cover
Hera, who walks in golden sandals, is the Queen of Heaven known for her jealousy, and because of it, she persecuted her husband's lovers and the children he had by them.

Hera is a daughter of Kronos and Rhea. She, like her siblings, was swallowed by her father as soon as she was born. Zeus, with the help of Metis later tricked Kronos into a swallowing a potion that forced him to disgorge his offspring. Her siblings include Zeus, Hestia, Demeter, Hades, and Poseidon.

Hera is usually represented as a majestic woman of mature age, with a beautiful forehead, large and widely opened eyes, and with a grave and stern expression that commands reverence. Her hair was adorned with a crown or a diadem, with a veil frequently hanging down the back of her head, to characterize her as the bride of Zeus.

The children of Hera and Zeus are Ares, the goddess of yound Hebe Eileithyia, the Cretan goddess of childbirth and Typhon, the serpent of Delphi. After Zeus birthed Athena from his head, Hera conceived her own child without intercourse. This son (Hephaestus) was born deformed, and Hera cast him out of heaven in disgust. Hephaestus, when grown, trapped his mother on a magical, binding throne as punishment of her earlier rejection.

Hera's personality was not as attractive, for she was frequently petty, cruel and vindictive, and in myths is most often shown administering some sort of revenge on one of Zeus’ lovers or his illegitimate children. Some of the more famous victims of the wrath of Hera included the greatest Greek hero, Hercules, the son of Zeus and a mortal women named Alcmena. Hera hounded and punished Hercules throughout his life. Soon after his birth, she sent two snakes to kill him, but the infant Hercules, who would become known for his tremendous strength, strangled the snakes instead. Another time, Hera drove Hercules temporarily insane, causing him to kill his own wife and children. Once, when she raised a storm against Hercules' ship, Zeus retaliated by hanging Hera from Mount Olympus by her wrists, with anvils attached to her feet.

The goddess was wrathful at losing to Aphrodite the prize of the Golden Apple addressed "to the Fairest" (Aphrodite bribe to Paris for the prize). She took her anger out on the city Troy, supporting the Greeks, in a war over the elopement of unfaithful Helene.

Cardea

Cardea Cover
Cardea was the goddess of health, thresholds and door hinges and handles, also associated with the wind. Her name comes from cardo, meaning door-pivot. She protected children against vampires and witches, and was also the benefactress of craftsmen. Her cult was important in ancient Rome, and was a close companion of Janus, the God of the threshold. Masks, balls and figurines (oscilla) were hung from doorways or trees to encourage crop growth in reverence to her. The hawthorn tree was sacred to her. Ovid said of Cardea, in what is apparently a religious formula, "Her power is to open what is shut; to shut what is open. " She was originally the nymph Carna until Janus gave her power over door handles and hinges and status as the protectress of children.

Greek Goddess Athena

Posted by Unknown

Greek Goddess Athena Cover
Our Goddess today is probably the third one most people think of when they think of Goddesses (after Aphrodite and Isis). She has been given so many names that she brings my current count to 74!

ATHENA is the Greek Goddess of wisdom, justice, and war. She is the daughter of Zeus and Metis, another Goddess of wisdom. When he found out that Metis was pregnant, Zeus, fearing that she would bear a son who would be mightier than him, swallowed her. Metis fashioned a robe and helmet for the daughter she would soon have, and the hammering of the helmet caused Zeus great headaches. To ease his father's pain, Hephaistos split his skull open with his mighty ax, and Athena emerged, fully grown and wearing the robe and helmet her mother had made. Zeus was astounded by this beautiful daughter, and she immediately became his favorite.

Athena is one of the primary Goddesses of the Greek pantheon. She is the patron Goddess of the city of Athens, and is often represented by an owl. THE PAWNEES WERE A HUNTING PEOPLES WHO FOCUSED THEIR EFFORTS MORE ON HUNTING THAN ON FARMING....FEELING THAT THE ACT OF AGRICULTURE AND PLOWING WAS AN INSULT TO HER.

IN FACT, WHEN ASKED TO ABANDON THEIR HUNTING AND AND SETTLE DOWN TO FARMING, THEIR PRIEST REPLIED...."YOU ASK ME TO PLOW THE GROUND? SHALL I TAKE A KNIFE AND TEAR MY MOTHER'S BOSOM? THEN WHEN I DIE, SHE WILL NOT TAKE ME TO HER BOSOM TO REST."

ATIRA IS THE SACRED MOTHER OF ALL LIFE, AND HER INFLUENCE IS MOST PREVALENT IN THE UNTAMED FIELDS AND FORESTS.

Goddess Lethe Image
"(THE RIVER LETHE)"

THERE ARE ACTUALLY TWO LETHES TO BE FOUND IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY--THE GODDESS AND THE RIVER. "LETHE" IS THE GREEK GODDESS OF OBLIVION; SHE IS THE PERSONIFICATION OF FORGETFULNESS AND CONCEALMENT. SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF ERIS (STRIFE) AND THE SISTER OF THANATOS (DEATH), AND ACCORDING TO SOME SOURCES, SHE WAS THE MOTHER OF THE GRACES/CHARITIES. NOT MUCH IS KNOWN ABOUT THIS GODDESS, BUT ONE OF THE EARLIEST REFERENCES TO THIS LETHE COMES TO US FROM HESIOD IN HIS "THEOGONY."

..."BUT ABHORRED ERIS BARE PAINFUL PONOS (TOIL) AND LETHE (FORGETFULNESS."...

THE RIVER "LETHE" IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE "RIVER OF FORGETFULNESS AND IS ONE OF THE FIVE RIVERS OF THE GREEK UNDERWORLD THAT FLOW THROUGH HADES. THE RIVER LETHE HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE AFTERLIFE OF THE ANCIENT GREEKS. IT IS SAID THAT THE NEWLY DEAD WHO, UPON THEIR ARRIVAL IN HADES, DRANK OF THIS RIVER WOULD FORGET ALL ABOUT THEIR EARTHLY LIVES AND THEIR HOW THEY DIED. SOME ANCIENT GREEKS HELD THE BELIEF THAT SOULS WERE MADE TO DRINK FROM THE RIVER BEFORE BEING REINCARNATED SO THEY WOULD NOT REMEMBER THEIR PAST LIVES. HENCE, THE RIVER LETHE IS STRONGLY CONNECTED TO REINCARNATION.

Baiulgan

Baiulgan Cover
Bai-"Ulgen or "Ulgen is a Turkic and Mongolian creator-deity, usually distinct from Tengri but sometimes identified with him in the same manner as Helios and Apollo. His name is from Old Turkic bey, "rich", and "ulgen, "magnificent". Ulgan is thought to be without a beginning and an end. In Turkic and Mongolian mythology, the birch tree, regarded as a cosmic axis between earth and sky, was regarded as sacred to him, as was the horse (horse-sacrifice was a part of his worship). Ulgan symbolizes goodness, welfare, abundance, plenty of food, water, etc. Furthermore, he created earth, heaven and all living beings. In addition, he controls the atmosphere events and movements of stars. He creates land for people to live, humans' and animals' heads, and the rainbow. He was regarded as the patron god of shamans and the source of their knowledge. It is believed that Ulgan has been created from Tengri (Tengere Kayra Khan). He is the highest deity after Tengri. Sometimes, Ulgan is compared with Tengri and they are thought to be the same. In some sayings, Ulgan takes place of Tengri, but not completely. Ulgan is the enemy of Erlik who is the god of evil and darkness. Ulgen protects humankind against him. Ulgan has seven sons, named "Karakus, Karsit, Pura Kan, Burca Kan, Yasil Kan, Er Kanim, Bakti Kan", and nine daughters, named Akkizlar and Kiyanlar. His daughters are source of inspiration for shamans. Bai-Ulgan lives on the sixteenth floor of the sky above the stars, sun and moon in a golden house. People can never reach him, except shamans or kams. Animals are used for sacrifice to him, especially horses. Once in every third, sixth, ninth, or twelfth year, shamans sacrifice a white horse at the first step of reaching Ulgan. Then he accompanies its soul, penetrates through all the layers of heaven until he reaches Ulgan. Firstly, kam meets Yayik who is the servant of Ulgan. This deity informs the kam whether or not the offering has been accepted, and the shaman learns of impending dangers, such as bad harvests.

Chalchiuhtlicue Aztec Goddess Of Water Image
CHALCHIUHTLICUE IS THE AZTEC GODDESS OF WATER, THE MOTHER OF THE LAKES, STREAMS, RIVERS, AND THE SEA. HER NAME MEANS "JADE SKIRT" OR "LADY OF THE PRECIOUS GREEN." SHE WAS UNIVERSALLY REVERED BY THE NAHUA PEOPLE SHE IS A FERTILITY DEITY WHO PRESIDES OVER THE BIRTH OF CHILDREN AND BLESSES THEM DURING THEIR FIRST BATH. IT IS SAID THAT DURING THE BIRTHING PROCESS AND THE ARRIVAL OF THE NEWBORN, THE MIDWIFE PERFORMS A SPECIAL CEREMONY WHICH INVOLVES THE MIDWIFE SHOUTING WAR CRIES IN HONOR OF THE BATTLE THE MOTHER HAD JUST FOUGHT IN GIVING BIRTH. THE CORD IS THEN CEREMONIOUSLY CUT WHILE THE MIDWIFE TELL BABY ALL ABOUT LIFE. THEN, DURING THE FIRST BATH, THE MIDWIFE TELLS THE BABY THE STORY OF CHALCHIUHTLICUE. IN MY OPINION, THIS IS REALLY A WONDERFUL CUSTOM.

CHALCHIUHTLICUE IS DEPICTED AS DRESSED IN CLOTHING WHICH IS DECORATED WITH WATER LILIES. TASSELS HANG DOWN FROM EITHER SIDE OF HER FACE. SHE HOLDS A RATTLE IN HER HANDS. SHE WAS THE PERSONIFICATION OF YOUTHFUL BEAUTY. TO THE PEOPLE, SHE WAS SEEN AS A FLOWING RIVER WHICH PRODUCED A PRICKLY PEAR TREE, THE SYMBOL OF THE HUMAN HEARTS THAT WERE SACRIFICED TO HER. IN AZTEC MYTHOLOGY, SHE IS THE CONSORT OF TLALOC, THE GOD OF THE SKY. HOWEVER, HE WAS DRIVEN AWAY BY QUESTZALCOALI; CHALCHIUHTLICUE WAS FURIOUS OVER THIS TURN OF EVENTS AND CAUSED VIOLENT FLOODS OVER THE EARTH AND ONLY THOSE WHO WERE TURNED TO FISH SURVIVED.

CHALCHIUHTLICUE WAS THE PATRON SAINT OF THE SEA AND THE VERACRUZ REGION OF THE GULF OF MEXICO. PEOPLE WHO MADE THEIR LIVING FROM THE WATER PRAYED TO HER CONSTANTLY. AN ANNUAL FEAST TO THIS GODDESS WAS ALWAYS A WELL-ATTENDED EVENT IN WHICH A SPECIAL SACRIFICE WAS MADE. SHRINES MADE TO HER WERE USUALLY BUILT NEAR STREAMS, AQUEDUCTS, AND IRRIGATION DITCHES.

Goddess Mariamman

Goddess Mariamman Image
MARIAMMAN is a Hindu Goddess of fertility and rain. She is Mother Earth, worshipped especially in southern India and by Tamils around the world. Mariamman is often identified with Shitala, the Goddess of smallpox, and as such, she is also said to be able to cure disease. The rain she brings washes villages clean, taking the disease away. Mariamman is usually depicted with a reddish hue to her skin, and she wears a red dress. In some villages, she is represented only by a stone in the ground, symbolizing her head-the whole village is seen as her body.

One myth that explains Mariamman's origin says that she was once a beautiful woman named Nagavali. One day, while her husband was out, the Trimurti (a three-headed figure representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) came to see if the stories of her beauty and virtue were true. Not knowing them, Nagavali turned the Gods into little children. They then cursed her-her beauty faded away to be replaced by pox, which she carried to the people around her. She then became known as Mariamman, "the goddess who changed". Alternative versions of her name include MARIAMMA, MARIKA, AMMAN, MARI, MAHAMAAYI, and MAARIAMMA.

Goddess Satis

Goddess Satis Image
SATIS is the Egyptian Goddess of the Nile floods and fertility. She is associated with the star Sirius, which the Egyptians called Sothis, because its return to the night sky heralded the beginning of the flood season. Her temple at Elephantine was built to align with the position of the star. Satis also protected the southern border of Egypt; her name means "one who shoots" and the hieroglyph for her name included an animal skin pierced by an arrow. Her association with fertility comes from the fact that the Nile floods resulted in very fertile soil. Her name is also seen as SATET, SATES, SATI, and SATJIT.

ASSOCIATIONS

"Deity": Artemis, Sekhmet

"Animal": Cat"s, Lions

"Symbol": Sistrum, Aegis

FAMILY & OTHER CONNECTIONS

Bast was sister to Sekhmet and their parents were Ra and Atum. Or alternatively she was sister to Horus and the daughter of Osiris and Isis. Wife of Ptah, mother of Mihos. Bast became associated with Wadjet, eventually the two becoming Wadjet-Bast.

INFORMATION the cat-headed goddess is certainly easy to recognise and remember. She was a local deity whose worship was centered in the city of Bubastis or 'House of Bast'. The 'Bastet' variant of her name has been translated to mean 'she of the ointment jar' and Bast was known as a goddess of perfumes. In this role she was seen as wife to Anubis, god of embalming, despite other stories giving her as his mother.

Bast was given one of the Divine Eyes in the form of Uraeus, the serpent of wisdom, by Ra as a reward for defending him against Apep. As a lion goddess, Bast was patron and protector to Lower Egypt, but when it lost in the wars against Upper Egypt Bast took on a less threatening form; that of a cat. In this guise she was recognised as a good mother, and Egyptian women wanting children would honour her.

MAGIC

Goddess of music, dance, pleasure and fertility, Bast was protector of women and children as well as domestic cats. Bast is also associated with qualities of the lion, such as strength, agility and loyalty.

MISC

Bast was a sun goddess for most of the time she was being worshipped, but as she became known more as a cat goddess than a lion goddess, so also did she turn into a moon goddess. Cats were particularly revered in Egypt as they would keep the grain stores free from rats. Some Egyptians even had their cats mummified and buried with them in tombs.

Her feast day was celebrated on October 31st.

Greek Goddess Metis

Greek Goddess Metis Image
METIS (pronounced MEE-tiss) is the Greek Goddess of good counsel. She is the daughter of the Titans Tethys and Okeanos, Goddess and God of the oceans. She is said to have been Zeus's first wife, and was one of his greatest counsellors. It was Metis who gave Zeus's father Kronos a potion that caused him to vomit up the other Gods he had eaten, leading to the war between the Titans and the Olympians. Unfortunately, Metis was too wise for her own good--she told Zeus that she would bear children to him who would surpass him in wisdom, and when she was pregnant, Zeus tricked her into turning herself into a fly and swallowed her. Inside Zeus, Metis continued to prepare for the coming of the child inside her, a daughter. She made a robe and a helmet for the girl, and the hammering of the helmet gave Zeus such a headache that he begged his son Hephaistos to use his ax to split his head open and relieve the pain. When Hephaistos did this, the Goddess Athena sprang out, fully grown and dressed in the robe and helmet that her mother had made. Metis remained inside Zeus, and continued to give him advice. Metis's name means "counsel," and the epithets FAIR-FACED and LOVELY-HAIRED were used to describe her.

Ku

Posted by Unknown

Ku Image
In Hawaiian mythology Ku or Ku-ka-ili-moku (see below) is one of the four great gods along with Kanaloa, Kane, and Lono. He is known as the god of war and the husband of the goddess Hina. Some have taken this to suggest a complementary dualism, as the word ku in the Hawaiian language means "standing up" while one meaning of hina is "fallen down". This analysis is not supported by evidence from other Polynesian languages which distinguish the original "ng" and "n". Hina's counterpart in New Zealand for example, is Hina, associated with the moon, rather than Hinga, "fallen down". Thus, the Hawaiian name Hina is probably rather connected to the other meaning of hina, denoting a silvery-grey color (like the full moon); indeed the moon is named Mahina in the Hawaiian language. File:Kuka'ilimoku. jpg Ku-ka-ili-moku Ku is worshipped under many names, including Ku-ka-ili-moku (also written Kukaʻilimoku), the "Seizer of Land", a feather-god. He was the guardian of Kamehameha I who erected monuments to him at the Holualoa Bay royal center and his residence at Kamakahonu. Rituals included human sacrifice, which was not part of the worship of the other gods. Ku, Kane, and Lono caused light to shine in upon the world. They are uncreated gods who have existed from eternity. The Kailua-Kona lighthouse was built on land known as Kukailimoku Point.
