NUT is the Egyptian Goddess of the sky. Her body arches over the world to form the sky, protecting the world from the chaos beyond, with her hands and feet placed at the four cardinal points. When she laughs, we hear thunder; when she cries, we feel the rain. Nut is also the mother of the sun and the stars--every day she gives birth to the sun, every night she gives birth to the stars. After their travels across the sky, she swallows them and they are rejuvenated in her body. This belief gives Nut rule over resurrection. Her image was often painted on the inside of coffins and sarcophagi, so that the deceased could enter her body and be reborn.
