XILONEN (pronounced she-LO-nen) is the Aztec Goddess of corn. She is the wife of Tezcatlipoca, God of the night sky and the earth. She represents the young corn, just reaching tenderness. She is the maiden aspect of the corn Goddess, Chicomecoatl as the mother aspect, and Ilamatecuhtli as the crone. Her name means "the hairy one," referring to the silk tassels on new corn. In summer, maidens were sacrificed in Xilonen's name to ensure a good harvest of corn.

PINIKIR is the Elamite Great Goddess, mother of the Gods. She was the wife of Khumban, God of the earth, and was predominantly worshipped in Susa, in the north of Elam (now southwest Iran). As the center of Elamite power moved from north to south, Pinikir was "divorced" by Khumban and replaced with Kiririsha, the Great Goddess of the southern city of Liyan. Goddess Erzulie Freda Image
ERZULIE FREDA is the Vodoun Goddess of love and beauty. Vodou has three sets of deities or lwas-Rada, Ghede, and Petro-each with their own associations. Erzulie Freda is the Rada aspect of the Goddess Erzulie, and she represents romantic love, sweetness, and luxury. She loves perfume, the color pink, fancy clothes, and the good life, and she wears three wedding rings, one for each of her three husbands. Erzulie Freda can be called upon to bring love and luxury to one's life, but she is a little spoiled. She always wants more from her followers-fancier clothes, more champagne, more designer shoes. When she doesn't get what she wants, she bursts into tears, and plunges a sword into her heart. Even in the midst of her wealth, the world disappoints her, and she reminds us that material wealth is not the only wealth we must strive towards. She is also known as ERZULIE FREDA DAHOMEY, because she originated from Dahomey (now the West African country of Benin).

The Rainbow Goddess

The Rainbow Goddess Image
"THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, MANY OF US HAVE LOOKED TO THE RAINBOW AS A SYMBOL OF HOPE. THE ANCIENT GREEKS WENT A STEP FURTHER. THE PERSONIFIED THE RAINBOW AS THE GODDESS IRIS", THE BELOVED MESSENGER OF THE GODS WHO IS OFTEN REPRESENTED AS THE HAND MAIDEN PERSONAL MESSENGER OF HERA. IRIS IS THE DAUGHTER OF THE TITAN, THAUNUS, A SEA GOD, AND ELECTRA, A CLOUD NYMPH. SHE IS THE SISTER OF THE HARPIES. SHE IS THE WIFE OF ZEPHYRUS, GOD OF THE WEST WIND. AFTER THE RAINS OF APRIL, SHE BRINGS US THE GIFT OF THE RAINBOW.

IRIS IS USUALLY DEPICTED AS A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG MAIDEN WITH GOLDEN WINGS AND A STAFF; SHE CARRIES A PITCHER WHICH CONTAINS WATER FROM THE RIVER STYX. AS A MESSENGER, SHE HER SHIMMERING WINGS CARRY HER AS FAST AS THE WIND FROM ONE CORNER OF THE EARTH TO THE OTHER...AND HUMANS CAN SEE ONLY THE TRAIL OF HER RAINBOW-COLORED PASSAGE ACROSS THE SKY...AND, JUST AS THE RAINBOW IS THOUGHT TO LINK HEAVEN TO EARTH, IT IS IRIS WHO LINKS THE GODS TO HUMANS.

AMONG HER DUTIES WAS LEADING THE SOULS OF THE DEAD WOMEN TO THE ELYSIAN FIELDS; HENCE, IN A TOKEN OF THEIR FAITH, THE GREEKS PLANTED PURPLE IRIS'S UPON THE GRAVES OF WOMEN...HOPING THAT IRIS WOULD GUIDE THEIR LOVED ONES TO THEIR RESTING PLACE.
