Anu

Anu Image
In Sumerian mythology and later for Assyrians and Babylonians, Anu (also An) was a sky-god, the god of heaven, lord of constellations, king of gods, spirits and demons, and dwelt in the highest heavenly regions. It was believed that he had the power to judge those who had committed crimes, and that he had created the stars as soldiers to destroy the wicked. His attribute was the royal tiara, most times decorated with two pairs of bull horns. He was one of the oldest gods in the Sumerian pantheon, and part of a triad including Enlil, god of the air and Enki, god of water. He was called Anu by the Akkadians. By virtue of being the first figure in a triad consisting of Anu, Enlil, and Enki (also known as Ea), Anu came to be regarded as the father and at first, king of the gods. Anu is so prominently associated with the E-anna temple in the city of Uruk in southern Babylonia that there are good reasons for believing this place to have been the original seat of the Anu cult. If this is correct, then the goddess Inanna of Uruk may at one time have been his consort.

Aphrodite Goddess Of Love

Aphrodite Goddess Of Love Cover
APHRODITE (Roman name Venus) was the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. She was also a protectress of sailors. The poet Hesiod said that Aphrodite was born from sea-foam. Homer, on the other hand, said that she was the daughter of Zeus and Dione.

APHRODITE was the goddess of love and beauty, in Greek mythology. She is said to be the daughter of Zeus and Dione, one of his consorts, but in later legends she is described as having sprung from the foam of the sea and her name may be translated "foam-risen."

This was Helen of Sparta, who became infamous as Helen of Troy when Paris subsequently eloped with her. In the ensuing Trojan War, Hera and Athena were implacable enemies of Troy while Aphrodite was loyal to Paris and the Trojans.

In Homeric legend Aphrodite is the wife of the lame and ugly god of fire, Hephaestus. Among her lovers was Ares, god of war, who in later mythology became her husband. She was the rival of Persephone, queen of the underworld, for the love of the beautiful Greek youth Adonis.

Perhaps the most famous legend about Aphrodite concerns the cause of the Trojan War. Eris, the goddess of discord, the only goddess not invited to the wedding of King Peleus and the sea nymph Thetis, resentfully tossed into the banquet hall a golden apple, marked "for the fairest." When Zeus refused to judge between the three goddesses who claimed the apple, Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, they asked Paris, prince of Troy, to make the award. Each offered him a bribe: Hera, that he would be a powerful ruler; Athena, that he would achieve great military fame; and Aphrodite, that he should have the fairest woman in the world. Paris selected Aphrodite as the fairest and chose as his prize Helen of Troy, the wife of the Greek king Menelaus. Paris's abduction of Helen led to the Trojan War.

Aphrodite was identified in early Greek religious beliefs with the Phoenician Astarte and was known as Aphrodite Urania, queen of the heavens, and as Aphrodite Pandemos, goddess of the people. When the Trojan prince Paris was asked to judge which of three Olympian goddesses was the most beautiful, he chose Aphrodite over Hera and Athena. The latter two had hoped to bribe him with power and victory in battle, but Aphrodite offered the love of the most beautiful woman in the world.

Allah

Allah Cover
Allah is the standard Arabic name for God. While the term is best known in the West for its use by Muslims as a reference to God, it is used by Arabs of all Abrahamic faiths, including Mizrahi Jews, Bah'a''is and Eastern Orthodox Christians, in reference to God. The name was previously used by pagan Meccans as a reference to the creator deity, possibly the supreme deity in pre-Islamic Arabia. The concepts associated with the term Allah (as a deity) differ among religious traditions. In pre-Islamic Arabia amongst pagan Arabs, Allah was not considered the sole divinity, having associates and companions, sons and daughters-a concept which Islam thoroughly and resolutely did away with. In Islam, the name Allah is the supreme and all-comprehensive divine name. All other divine names are believed to refer back to Allah. Allah is unique, the only Deity, creator of the universe and omnipotent. Arab Christians today use terms such as Allah al-'Ab (, "God the Father") to distinguish their usage from Muslim usage. There are both similarities and differences between the concept of God as portrayed in the Qur'an and the Hebrew Bible. It has also been applied to certain living human beings as personifications of the term and concept. Unicode has a codepoint reserved for Allah, = U+FDF2. Many Arabic type fonts feature special ligatures for Allah.

BILIKU is the Andamanese Island Goddess of creation and weather. She is a giant spider who wove webs in the sky. One day, bored with the empty sky, she sat down and made the Earth. She then made people to live on the earth, along with the plants and animals. She was so happy with the Earth that she went to live on it herself. Biliku made a fire for her home by striking a shell with a stone. After she fell asleep, a kingfisher came to steal the fire so that he could give it to man. Biliku woke up and saw him, and hurled a lightning bolt at him. She then returned to the sky, where she still flings lightning bolts and causes great storms when she gets upset.

It serves her for her bodice
What else should a Goddess wear?
Her heart beat breaks the planet open,
lays it's juices bare;
One breath from Madame Pele
Will vulcanize the air.

Oh, Pele, Pele, Pele, Pele,
Dance across the Heavens gaily
Spread your lava daily
Everywhere

Polynesian Gods assemble,
Pele makes the islands tremble
Makes the oceans boil
And whispers brimstone on the air.
Madame Pele gaily tinkers,

Making heavy drinkers
Everywhere.

Osun Love Goddess

Posted by Unknown

Osun Love Goddess Cover
Goddess Osun the Yoruba Goddess of Love, Fertility,Wealth and Abundance and the Power of Prayer.

As a daughter of Osun I have profound affinity for this Goddess and it was only fitting for me to speak of her first in my series about the pantheon of Orisa.

I have realized that the Orisa’s reveal themselves in different ways to everyone these are some of the most common traits traditionally used to describe her.

?hun is beneficent, generous and very kind. She does, however, have a horrific temper, one which she seldom ever loses but which causes untold destruction whenever she does. Oshun is said to have gone to a drum festival one day and to have fallen in love with the king-dancer Shango, God of lightning & thunder. Since that day, Shango has been married to Oba, Oya, and Oshun, though Oshun is said to be considered his principal wife.

She is associated with the color yellow, metal brass, peacock feathers, mirrors, honey and anything of beauty, her principal day of the week is Friday and the number she is associated with is 5.

According to the Yoruba elders, Oshun is the “unseen mother present at every gathering”, because Oshun is the Yoruba understanding of the cosmological forces of water, moisture, and attraction. Therefore, she is believed to be omnipresent and omnipotent. Her power is represented in another Yoruba proverb which reminds us that “no one is an enemy to water” and therefore everyone has need of and should respect and revere Oshun, as well as her followers.

Oshun is the force of harmony. Harmony which we see as beauty, feel as love, and experience as ecstasy. She, according to the ancients, was the only female Irunmole amongst the original 16 sent from the spirit realm to create the world. As such, she is revered as “Yeye” – the great mother of us all. When the male Irunmole attempted to subjegate Oshun due to her femaleness, she removed her divine energy (called ase by the Yoruba) from the project of creating the world and all subsequent efforts at creation were in vain. It was not until visiting with the Supreme Being, Olodumare and begging for Osun’s pardon (as advised by Olodumare) that the world could continue to be created. But not before Osun had given birth to a son. This son became Elegba, (Esu) the great conduit of ase in the Universe, the eternal and infernal trickster.

Oshun is known as Iyalode, the “(explicitly female) chief of the market.” She is also known as Laketi, she who has ears, because of how quickly and effectively she answers prayers. When she possesses her followers, she dances, flirts and then weeps- because no one can love her enough and the world is not as beautiful as she knows it could be.
In Cuban Lukumi tradition, Oshun has many roads, or manifestations. Some of these include:

Oshun Ibu Ikole — Oshun the Vulture. This Oshun is associated with Witches (Aje), and her symbols are the vulture, and the mortar and pestle (both of which are symbols of witchcraft). In Cuba, her mythology says that this Oshun saved the world by flying the prayers of the dying world up to the Sun (Orun), where Olodumare lives. In West Africa, however, this myth is attributed to Yemoja.

Oshun Ibu Anya — Oshun of the Drums. This Oshun is the patron of dancing and the Anya drums. She is said to dance ceaselessly to forget her troubles.

Oshun Ibu Yumu — This Oshun is the eldest Oshun. She sits at the bottom of the river, knitting.

Oshun Ibu D’Oko — Oshun, the wife of Orisha Oko. This Oshun is pictured as a furrow to be plowed and a giant vulva, while her husband Orisha Oko is a farmer and pictured as a giant phallus. This is one of Oshun’s most obviously procreative manifestations.

Oshun Ololodi — Oshun, the diviner. This Oshun is the wife of Orunmila, the Orisha of Ifa divination.

Oshun Ibu Akuaro — Oshun, the Quail. The children of this manifestation of Oshun are said to be very nervous people.

In my life I have found that invoking the power of Osun has brought to me the gift of heart felt prayer, not being afraid to ask for what it is that I need and want in my life and the munificent mother answers prayers with the swiftest response….abundance through prayer. Below you can find prayer to Osun. Blessings and Light!

God Energy

Posted by Unknown

God Energy Cover
It is an inspired truth, common among most pantheistic and so-called primitive religions of the world, that there is a great primeval intelligence, an energy that gives life and form to every particle of the universe. The archetype gods and goddesses are all part of this great intelligence, each having dominion over a different aspect of life.

Each star and planet is a sentient being, capable of manifesting in human form if necessary, as is each individual feature of the landscape. Each tree, each plant, even the stones on the ground are all given life and awareness through their roles in this great intelligence, as of course is animal life, from the most minute creature, to man himself.

Because all creation is part of this great god energy, everything is worthy of respect, and because all matter is connected through this energy we can tune into and use it through prayer and magic.

In Greek mythology, Rhea is the mother of the gods, daughter of Uranus and Gaia. She is married to her brother Cronus and is the mother of Demeter, Hades, Hera, Hestia, Poseidon and Zeus.

Cronus, jealous of the future power of his children and to secure his dominion, hate his own children but Rhea managed to rescue one son, Zeus. She hid him in the Dictean Cave in Crete and gave Cronus a stone wrapped in the clothes of the infant, which he swallowed. Thus Rhea succeeded in making him believe that he had killed all of his children. When Zeus reached maturity he overpowered and dethroned his father and made Cronus disgorge his siblings.

Rhea is identified with mother goddess Cybele from Asia Minor and is also known as Rhea Cybele and Magna Mater {'great mother'}. She was worshipped with orgiastic rites. Rhea is depicted between two lions or on a chariot pulled by lions.

Goddess Mayahuel Image
MAYAHUEL (pronounced ma-ha-KWEL) is the Aztec Goddess of fertility and of the maguey, an agave plant. As a fertility Goddess, Mayahuel is depicted with many breasts with which to feed her children, the the Centzontotochtli, or four hundred rabbits. The rabbits are responsible for the infinite kinds of drunkenness, Mayahuel's other area of influence. The maguey plant was used to make a fermented drink called pulque, forerunner to tequila.

According to legend, Mayahuel was originally mortal, and was the wife of a farmer. One day while in the agave patch, she saw a mouse who appeared to be drunk. She tried to scare it away, but it just laughed at her. Mayahuel noticed that the mouse had been drinking the juice of the agave plants, so she collected some juice to bring to her husband. The juice was set aside while Mayahuel and her husband finished their work, and it fermented. When they returned in the evening, they tasted it and were delighted with both the flavor and the effects. Mayahuel shared her discovery with the people of Mexico, who were so grateful that they made her a Goddess.

Goddess Chalchiuhtlicue Image
Today's Goddess puts my total number of names up to 2500, one-quarter of the way to my goal! Also, you may have noticed that my shopping cart is gone--it blew up last week and I'm hoping it will be back up and running (new and improved!) by the middle of next week.

CHALCHIUHTLICUE (pronounced chal-chee-OOT-lee-kway) is the Aztec Goddess of all running water, including rain. She also ruled over fertility, as water was known to bring life to plants. She is the wife of the rain God Tlaloc, and rules over Tlalocan at his side. Tlalocan is the fourth layer of the heavens, the place to which those who died from phenomena associated with water, such as drowning, went in the afterlife. One day, Chalchiuhtlicue, looking at the evils in the world, began to cry--her tears streamed across the land as a giant flood to cleanse the world. She created a rainbow bridge to save those who gained her favor.

Chalchiuhtlicue is usually depicted wearing a jade necklace, a crown of feathers, and with a skirt decorated with water lilies. Her name means "she who wears a jade skirt," and she was also known as MATLALCUEITL by the Tlaxcala, which means "she who wears a green skirt".

The Grim Reaper

The Grim Reaper Cover
He rose to prominence during the plagues that killed most of the European population. Which only happened after the humans burned witches and cats I might add. He usually appears as a robed skeleton carrying a scythe, sickle or hourglass. He often wears robes, most usually black. However as different plagues would spread different versions almost brothers or servants of the grim reaper would appear.

It was thought he was both a symbolic warning on the shortness of life, and an actual being. Although the church was not fond of the idea, many artists would make some sort of painting or art in an effort to appease death. Many dances, folk tales, and offerings would grow around him to win his favor.

Heracles Son Of The Gods

Heracles Son Of The Gods Cover
Heracles is the son of the god Zeus and Alcmene. His gift was fabulous strength; he strangled two serpents in his cradle, and killed a lion before manhood. Heracles' main antagonist was Hera. She eventually drove him mad, during which time he killed his own children and his brother's. He was so grieved upon recovery that he exiled himself and consulted the oracle of Apollo. The oracle told him to perform twelve labors

These Twelve Labors were:

- Kill the carnivorous birds of Stymphalis.
- Capture the wild bull of Crete.
- Kill the nine-headed Hydra. Two new heads would grow on the Hydra from each fresh wound, and one was immortal. Heracles burned the eight and put the immortal one under a rock.
- Capture the Ceryneian Hind. After running after it for many months, he finally trapped it.
- Capture the oxen of Geryon.
- Kill the lion of Nemea. He strangled it without further ado.
- Kill the wild boar of Erymanthus. A wild battle, but pretty straightforward: Heracles won.
- Clean the Augean Stables of King Augeas. He succeeded only by diverting a nearby river to wash the muck away.
- Capture the man-eating mares of Diomedes.
- Obtain the girdle of Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons.
- Bring Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Hades, to the surface world. Heracles was now free to return to Thebes and marry Deianira. Later the centaur Nessus tried to abduct Deianira; Heracles shot him with a poisoned arrow. The dying Nessus told Deianira to keep his blood, as it would always preserve Heracles' love. When Deianira later feared she was being supplanted by Iole, Deianira sent Heracles a garment soaked in Nessus' blood. It poisoned Heracles, who was taken to Olympus and endowed with immortality after death.
- Take the golden apples from the garden of the Hesperides, which was always guarded by the dragon Ladon. Heracles tricked Atlas into getting he apples by offering to hold the Earth for Atlas. When he returned with the apples, Heracles asked him to take the Earth for a moment so he could go get a pillow for his aching shoulders. Atlas did so, and Heracles left with his apples.

other names: Herakles, Hercules.

Goddess Vesna

Goddess Vesna Image
"VESNA" IS THE OLD SLAVIC GODDESS OF SPRING AND AWAKENING. HER NAME MEANS MESSENGER. SHE WAS A PROTECTOR OF HER PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THE WOMEN.

SHE RETURNS FROM THE UNDERWORLD AT THE "VERNAL EQUINOX", BRINGING "SPRINGTIME" ALONG WITH HER.

ON THE LAST WEEK OF MARCH, WHEN THE ICE BEGINS TO MELT, THE OLD SLAVONIC PEOPLES HELD A CELEBRATE TO ANNOUNCE THAT DEATH "(WINTER)" WAS ABOUT TO LEAVE AND NEW LIFE WAS ABOUT TO TAKE ITS PLACE. IT WAS SAID THAT ON THIS NIGHT, THE GATES OF HEAVEN WOULD OPEN, AND IF ANYONE ASKED FOR A SPECIAL GIFT AT THE MOMENT OF THE OPENING, THEIR WISH WOULD BE GRANTED. THE RUSSIAN PEASANT, THEREFORE, STAYED OUT IN THE FIELD ALL NIGHT IN ORDER TO WATCH FOR THE OPENING OF THE SKY. USUALLY, THOUGH, THEY HAD A BIT TOO MUCH VODKA AND FELL ASLEEP.

THEN, AS SOON AS THE FIRST SIGNS OF SUNRISE WERE OBSERVED IN THE EAST BY THE WOMEN WHO HAD KEPT WATCH DURING THE NIGHT, THE VILLAGERS WERE ROUSED AND HASTENED TO THE NEAREST HILL FACING EAST, WHERE THE EARLIEST RAYS OF THE SPRING SUN WOULD FALL, WAITING TO WELCOME VESNA. THE TWO ELDERS OF THE VILLAGE TOOK WITH THEM A CLEAN WHITE CLOTH WHICH THEY WOULD SPREAD ON THE GROUND AT THE SUMMIT OF THE HILL, AND PLACE THE BREAD AND SALT UPON IT WHILE THE MEN CALLED OUT LOUDLY, "MOTHER VESNA! SEE HERE!" DESIRING THE GODDESS TO ACCEPT THEIR WELCOME.

Goddess Druantia

Goddess Druantia Image
DRUANTIA is the Celtic Goddess of fir trees and fertility. Her names derives from the Indo-European root "deru" meaning tree or wood. Also called the QUEEN OF THE DRUIDS, Druantia is associated with the fertility of both plants and humans, ruling over sex and passion. She is credited with the creation of the Celtic tree calendar, which divides the year into 13 months that correspond to the cycles of the moon. One association that is frequently mistaken with Druantia is with the Dryads--while both were magical beings who ruled over trees, the Dryads were Greek, not Celtic.
