THE STORY OF EUROPA IS WHICH A TALE WHICH HAS COME TO US ACROSS THOUSANDS OF YEARS. WE FIND LIKENESSES OF EUROPA AND HER WHITE BULL FEATURED OF BOTH GREEK VASES AND ON ROMAN MOSAICS, BUT WHO IS EUROPA?

EUROPA WAS THE BEAUTIFUL YOUNG MORTAL DAUGHTER OF AGENOR, THE PHOENICIAN KING OF TYRE WHO WAS SAID TO BE A DESCENDANT OF POSEIDON. THE LEGEND OF EUROPA AND ZEUS BEGINS WHEN SHE WAS GATHERING FLOWERS BY THE SEA, SHE WAS SPOTTED BY ZEUS; HE WAS OVERWHELMED BY HER GREAT BEAUTY IMMEDIATELY FELL IN LOVE WITH HER. HIS LOVE FOR HER WAS SO OVERWHELMING THAT HE TRANSFORMED HIMSELF INTO THE FORM OF A MAGNIFICENT WHITE BULL AND MADE HIS WAY TO THE SHORE WHERE SHE WAS GATHERING THE FLOWERS ALONG WITH HER FEMALE LADIES IN WAITING. THE BULL IS SLEEK AND HANDSOME, AND, OF COURSE, HE MADE SURE THAT HE APPEARED TO BE TAME BY ALLOWING THE LADIES TO PET HIM. AND THEN, HE LAID DOWN AT THE FEET OF EUROPA.

IN TIME, EUROPA FELT COMFORTABLE ENOUGH WITH THE BULL TO CLIMB UPON ITS BACK FOR A RIDE, BUT, ALAS, AS SOON AS SHE IS SAFELY SEATED, THE BULL RUSHES OUT TOWARD THE SEA AND CARRIES HER OFF TO THE SHORES OF CRETE. THERE, ZEUS CHANGES HIMSELF BACK INTO HIS ORIGINAL FORM AND REVEALS HIS DIVINE IDENTITY TO HER. THE MORTAL WOMAN THEN BECOMES ANOTHER OF THE GOD'S LOVERS AND THE FIRST QUEEN OF CRETE. SHE WENT ON TO BORE HIM THREE SONS--MONOS, SARPEDON, AND RHADAMANTHYS.

EUROPA WAS LEFT ON CRETE BY ZEUS BUT, THE STORY GOES THAT ZEUS LOVED HER SO MUCH THAT HE GAVE HER THREE PRICELESS GIFTS. THE FIRST WAS A MAGICAL MAN MADE OF BRONZE WHO STOOD GUARD ON CRETE; THE SECOND WAS A DOG THAT EXCELLED IN THE HUNT; AND THE THIRD GIFT WAS THAT OF A JAVELIN WHICH ALWAYS HIT ITS TARGET.

We know Europa today as one of Jupiter's 16 original moons; it is a special moon, for it is one of the few moons in our entire solar system that is thought to have liquid water.
