"SEQUANA" IS A CELTIC RIVER GODDESS; SHE IS CONNECTED TO THE RIVER SEINE...SPECIFICALLY TO THE SPRINGS LOCATED AT THE SOURCE OF THE RIVER; THIS IS CALLED FONTES SEQUANAE (THE SPRING OF SEQUANA). WATER WAS VENERATED BY THE CELTS AS A SOURCE OF THE LIFE FORCE AND FOR ITS CLEANSING AND CURATIVE POWERS; THUS, AS A RIVER GODDESS, SEQUANA WAS STRONGLY CONNECTED TO THE ART OF HEALING.
IT WAS HERE AT FONTES SEQUANAE THAT A HEALING SHRINE WAS ESTABLISHED. INSCRIPTIONS TO THE GODDESS THANKING HER FOR CURES DEMONSTRATE THAT THIS WAS, INDEED, A HEALING CENTER. IT WAS LATER TAKEN OVER BY THE ROMANS WHO BUILT TWO TEMPLES IN ITS PLACE; MANY DEDICATIONS WAS MADE TO THE GODDESS AT THESE TEMPLES. IN ITS HEYDAY, FONTES SEQUANAE MUST HAVE BEEN A BUSTLING, CROWDED PLACE WITH MANY PILGRIMS, OFTEN DEPICTED AS CARRYING OFFERINGS TO THE GODDESS INCLUDING....MONEY, FRUIT, ETC... THEIR WAY TO HER SHRINE.
THE ONLY SURVIVING IMAGE OF SEQUANA IS SHOWN ABOVE....A BRONZE STATUE OF A WOMAN DRAPED IN GOWN WITH A DIADEM, POINTING TO HIGH STATURE, ON HER HEAD. SHE STANDS ON A BOAT, THE PROW OF WHICH IS SHAPED LIKE A DUCK.
