"ATALANTA" WAS THE GREEK GODDESS OF THE HUNT. HER NAME MEANS "BALANCED." SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF "IASUS", THE KING OF ARCADIA AND "CLYMENE, "THE TITAN GODDESS OF FAME. GREEK MYTH TELLS HOW SHE WAS ABANDONED AT BIRTH BECAUSE HER PARENTS HAD WANTED A BOY. SHE WAS SAVED WHEN THE GODDESS "ARTEMIS" SENT A SHE-BARE TO SUCKLE HER. LATER, SHE WAS FOUND BY HUNTERS WHO TOOK HER UNDER THEIR WINGS AND TAUGHT HER THEIR ARTS, AND WHEN SHE GREW TO ADULTHOOD, IiT WAS SAID THAT SHE COULD SHOOT, RUN, AND WRESTLE BETTER THAN MOST MEN.

LIKE "ARTEMIS, ATALANTA" HAD VOWED NEVER TO MARRY, AND WOULD RACE ANY MAN WHO HOPED TO WIN HER HAND. SEVERAL SUITORS CHALLENGED "ATALANTA", BUT SHE DEFEATED THEM ALL UNTIL THE ARRIVAL OF "MELANION. " HE LOVED "ATALANTA" AND CALLED UPON APHRODITE WHO GAVE HIM THREE GOLDEN APPLES. DURING THE RACE, WHENEVER "ATALANTA" WOULD GET AHEAD OF HIM, "MELANION" WOULD TOSS ONE FORWARD. "ATALANTA" COULD NOT RESIST STOOPING TO PICK IT UP. AND BECAUSE OF THIS, SHE LOST THE RACE.

"MELANION" TOOK HIS NEW WIFE HOME, BUT WITH HIS EXCITEMENT, HE FORGOT ALL ABOUT "APHRODITE" AND THE ROLE SHE HAD PLAYED SO DID NOT PAY HER PROPER THANKS. AND SO, TO PUNISH HIM, "APHRODITE" FILLED HIM WITH DESIRE AND HE LAY WITH "ATALANTA" WHILE IN THE TEMPLE "ZEUS," AND "ZEUS", SEEING THIS PROFANE ACT IN HIS TEMPLE, TURNED THEM INTO LION AND LIONESS.

Goddess Of The Dawn Image
"(AS EOS FIRST SPREAD HER YELLOW ROBE ACROSS THE EARTH, THUNDER-LOVING ZEUS ANNOUNCED AN ASSEMBLY OF THE GODS ON THE HIGHEST CREST OF MANY-RIDGED OLYMPUS.) HOMER'S ILIAD"

EOS WAS THE GREEK GODDESS OF THE DAWN; SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF THE TITANS, JYPERIOD AND THEIA AND THE SISTER OF HELIOS (SUN) AND SELENE (MOON). WHILE ALL OF THE OTHER GODS AND MORTALS WERE FAST ASLEEP, IT WAS EOS WHO ROSE AND AWAKENED THE EARTH BY MOUNTING HER CHARIOT AND RISING FROM THE EAST TO PERFORM HER DUTY OF ANNOUNCING THE APPROACH OF HER BROTHER, HELIOS.

SHE WAS AN INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL WOMAN WITH ROSE-COLORED FINGERS WHO WAS CROWNED WITH A TIARA AND THE LARGE FEATHERED WINGS OF A BIRD. INDEED, IT WAS THROUGH EOS THAT OUR VISION OF THE CHRISTIAN ANGELS WAS FORMED. ACCORDING TO THE TALES, SHE WAS FREE WITH HER FAVORS AND HAD MANY CONSORTS...AMONG THE TITANS AND THE MORTALS. ONE MORNING AS EOS LOOKED UPON THE EARTH, SHE SAW A YOUNG MAN, TITHONIS, JUST AWAKENING FROM HIS SLUMBER...AND IMMEDIATELY SHE WAS SMITTEN.

TITHONIS ONCE, THE TALE WAS, ROSE-ARMED DAWN,

LOVE SMITTEN, CARRIED OFF TO THE WORLD'S END.

HANDSOME AND YOUNG THEN, YET IN TIME GREY AGE

O'ERTOOK HIM, HUSBAND OF IMMORTAL WIFE.

--SAPPHO 4TH CENTURY

SHE WONDERED, THOUGH, HOW IT COULD BE BECAUSE HE WAS JUST A HUMAN...AND SHE A GREAT IMMORTAL GODDESS. SO, WHEN IT WAS TIME FOR HELIOS TO DRIVE HIS CHARIOT ACROSS THE SKY, EOS WENT TO ZEUS AND PLEADED WITH HIM TO GIFT TITHONIS WITH ETERNAL LIFE. ZEUS GRANTED HER WISH, AND EOS BROUGHT TITHONIS TO HER PALACE IN THE EAST WHERE THEY SPENT MANY HAPPY YEARS TOGETHER.

BUT, THIS WAS NOT DESTINED TO LAST, FOR ALTHOUGH TITHONIS HAD ETERNAL LIFE, EOS HAD FORGOTTEN TO ASK ZEUS FOR ETERNAL YOUTH; SLOWLY, THE PRINCE BEGAN TO SHOW THE SIGNS OF AGING. EOS WAS MORTIFIED AS HIS HAIR TURNED WHITE, AND EVENTUALLY HE LOST THE POWER OF HIS LIMBS. SHE SHUT HIM INTO HIS ROOM, BUT HIS FEEBLE VOICE COULD STILL BE HEARD. EVENTUALLY, HE GREW MORE AND MORE ANCIENT, SHRIVELING UP UNTIL ONE DAY TURNING INTO A GRASSHOPPER.

TITHONIS AND EOS HAD TWO SONS--MEMNON AND EMATHION, AND MEMNON, WHO HAD BECOME AN ETHIOPIAN KING, GATHERED AN ARMY AND WENT OFF TO FIGHT IN THE TROJAN WAR. A LONG BATTLE ENSUED BETWEEN HIM AND ACHILLES. EVENTUALLY, MEMNON FELL, AND THE TROJANS FLED IN DISMAY. EOS, WHO FROM HER STATION IN THE SKY HAD VIEWED THE SCENE BELOW, WEPT AND LAMENTED FOR HER SON. NIGHT, IN SYMPATHY WITH HER GRIEF SPREAD THE HEAVEN WITH CLOUDS AS ALL NATURE MOURNED FOR THE OFFSPRING OF THE DAWN. EOS REMAINS INCONSOLABLE FOR THE LOSS OF HER SON, AND HER TEARS CONTINUE TO FLOW. THEY CAN BE SEEN IN THE EARLY MORNING IN THE FORM OF THE DEWDROPS ON THE GRASS.

Goddess Ninhursag

Goddess Ninhursag Image
NINHURSAG is the Sumerian Goddess of fertility. She also supplanted Ki as Goddess of the earth and mother of the Gods. Myths of her origin vary, but many state that she is the sister of Enlil, God of the air, which would make her the daughter of Ki and Anu, God of the sky. Whatever her origin, Ninhursag is most closely associated with Enki, God of the waters, as his consort. In a well-preserved myth entitled "Enki and Ninhursag," Ninhursag bears Enki a daughter named Ninsar, who in turn is impregnated by Enki and bears Ninkurra. Ninkurra too has Enki's child, a daughter named Uttu. Uttu, unwilling to bear Enki's child, was instead advised by Ninhursag to bury his semen in the ground, where it grew into eight plants. These were the first plants on the earth, and Enki proceeded to eat them.

Ninhursag was furious with Enki for eating the plants, and she cursed him so that each plant caused a disease in a different part of his body. The other Gods pleaded with Ninhursag to take the curse off Enki, because without his waters, the earth and its people were dying. To cure him of the diseases, Ninhursag gave birth to eight deities--five Goddesses (Ninsutu, Ninkasi, Nanshe, Dazimira, and Ninti) and three Gods (Abu, Nintul, and Enshag). These eight were each able to heal one of Enki's diseases, and leave him whole and healthy once again.

Ninhursag's name means "lady of the mountains," and she was also called NINTU (lady of birth), NINMENNA (lady of the tiara), and NINMAH (exalted lady), although it is likely that these were names of other Goddesses who were later assimilated with Ninhursag. Other names associated with her include NINMUG (lady of the vulva), NINZINAK (lady of the embryo), NINSIGSIG (lady of silence), NINBAHAR (lady of pottery), NINDIM (lady fashioner), NIG-ZI-GAL-DIM-DIM-ME (fashioner of all things in which there is breath of life), NAGARNAM-LUULU (carpenter of mankind), NAGAR-SA-GA (carpenter of the insides), TIBIRA-KALAM-MA (bronze caster of the nation), SAG-ZU-KALAM-MA (midwife of the nation), SAG-ZU-DIGIR-E-NE (midwife of the Gods), MUD-KES-DA (blood-stancher), AMA-DUG-BAD (mother spreading her legs), AMA-DUMU-DUMU-NE (mother of all children), and AMA-DIGIR-RE-NE-KE (mother of the Gods).
