SIDURI is the Babylonian Goddess of wine and beer, merry-making, and wisdom. She lives in a tavern on the shore of the sea, beyond which is the Land of Life. Also called SIDURI SABITU (the innkeeper), she is referred to in the "The Epic of Gilgamesh "as "THE REFRESHER" or "THE GIRL WHOSE DRINKS REFRESH THE SOUL". She advises Gilgamesh to give up his quest for immortality in the wake of the death of his companion, Enkidu. On first seeing him coming towards her tavern, Siduri barred the door to Gilgamesh, because of his unkempt appearance. When he told her his identity and of his travels to find the immortal human Utnapishtim, she invited him in and shared her wisdom:
"You shall not find the life you seek,
For at the creation of mankind
The gods allotted Death to men.
They retained life in their own hands.
Gilgamesh, let your belly be full,
Make you merry by day and by night.
Make everyday a day of feasting and of rejoicing
Dance and play, by day, by night,
Let your clothes be sparkling and fresh
Wash your hair
Bathe your body
Attend to the babe who holds you by the hand
Take your wife and let her rejoice in you.
For this is the lot of mankind to enjoy
But immortal life is not for men."

SHE IS A CELTIC GODDESS OF FIRE, AND EACH ONE OF HER FACES REPRESENTS HER DOMINION OVER POETRY, HEALING AND SMITHCRAFT. AS THE MISTRESS OF THE MANTLE, SHE REPRESENTS THE VIRGIN ASPECT OF THE GREAT GODDESS. AS A WAR GODDESS, SHE WAS CALLED "FLAME OF IRELAND" AND "FIERY ARROW".
SHE IS ALSO THE KEEPER OF THE HOLY WELLS AND THE RIVERS OF HEALING. SHE IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION AND CRAFTMANSHIP...A WISE WOMAN OF HEALING AS WELL AS THE PATRONESS OF THE POETS AND PRIESTESSES. SHE WAS A TRANSISTIONAL DIETY AND AT TIMES IS DEPICTED IN TWO FORMS--THE "CAILLEACH" OR OLD CRONE OF WINTER, AND THE FAIR YOUNG MAIDEN OF SPRING. AND, AS CHRISTIAN THOUGHT INVADED THE ANCIENT WORLD, THE GODDESS BRIGID WAS SO POWERFUL THAT SHE WAS MORPHED INTO SAINT BRIGID OF KILDARE.
THE LEGEND OF BRIGID BEGAN AS A TRIPLICITY OF SISTERS. SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF THE DAGDA (THE GOOD GOD) MAKING HER ONE OF THE TUATHA DE DANANN, AND THE MORRIGAN. SHE IS HALF SISTER TO THE LOVE GOD, AENGUS. OTHERS SAY HER MOTHER WAS DANU, THE MOTHER EARTH. SOME BELIEVED SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF A DRUID. IT IS SAID THAT AT HER BIRTH, A COLUMN OF FLAME ROSE FROM THE TOP OF HER HEAD TO THE HEAVENS...CONNECTING HER TO THE UNIVERSE.
BRIGID ALSO HAD A DARK FACE AND IS LINKED TO THE SERPENT IN THE FOLLOWING VERSE:
"EARLY ON BRIDE'S MORN"
"SHALL THE SERPENT COME FROM THE VALE"
"I WILL NOT HARM THE SERPENT"
"NOR WILL THE SERPENT HARM ME."
The serpent was a symbol of wisdom and an attribute of old age; therefore, of the hag or crone. Brigid is described as having the gift of prophesy and was able to see the future. This may have been an early Christian attempt to accommodate the powerful and wise aspect of the great ancient Sun Goddess with the darker side of Brigid being played down when She was fully imported into the Christian canan

IT IS NO WONDER THAT GARLAND DAY IS A DAY FOR THE CHILDREN OF THE VILLAGE. IT IS A DAY THAT THEY USHER IN THE ARRIVAL OF SPRING BY WEAVING FLOWERS, GARLANDS, AND DEPOSITING THEM AROUND THE VILLAGE...SOMETIMES LEAVING THEM ON THE DOORSTEPS OF STRANGERS OR HANGING THEM FROM POLES. BY DOING THIS, THE VILLAGERS BELIEVE THAT THEY WILL RECEIVE THE BLESSINGS OF DAMARA AND WILL BE ENSURED A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST THE UPCOMING YEAR.

THEMIS is the Greek Goddess of divine order and law. She is one of the Titans, the children of Ouranos and Gaia, the oldest of the Gods. With her consort/brother Zeus, she bore the Horae (Goddesses of the Hours) and the Moirae (Goddesses of Fate). Themis presided over the laws of both Gods and men; when she was disregarded, she sent the Goddess Nemesis to deliver retribution. Themis is often depicted blindfolded and holding a set of scales, the original model of "blind justice". Themis was also a Goddess of prophecy--the Oracle at Delphi was originally hers until she gave it to the sun God Apollo. Among other things, she prophecied the theft of the golden apples and the birth of Heracles. Themis' name means "law of nature", and several epithets were associated with her: EUBOULOS (well-counselled), ORTHOBOULOS (straight-counselled), SOTEIRA (savior), HIERA (holy), AIDOIOS (reverend), EUGENES (high-born), and TITANIS (female Titan).
