SHE IS MAINLY DEPICTED WITH THE HEAD OF A HIPPOPOTAMUS, THE ARMS AND LEGS OF A LION, AND THE BACK AND TAIL OF A CROCODILE...A COMPOSITE OF ALL THINGS FEARED BY THE EGYPTIANS. SHE HAS THE BREASTS AND STOMACH OF A PREGNANT WOMAN, AND IT WAS IN HER ROLE OF PROTECTRESS THAT SHE WAS SEEN AS A GODDESS. TAWERET IS A RATHER AGGRESSIVE GUARDIAN OF PREGNANT WOMEN AND THOSE WHO ARE IN LABOR, DRIVING THE EVIL SPIRITS AWAY FROM MOTHER AND CHILD FOR CHILDBIRTH. BECAUSE THE EGYPTIANS BELIEVED THAT CHILDBIRTH AND EARLY INFANCY WERE FELT TO BE A DANGEROUS TIME FOR BOTH THE MOTHER AND THE CHILD, AMULETS OF TAWERET WERE USED BY PREGNANT WOMEN.
MANY OF THE GODS AND GODDESSES OF ANCIENT EGYPT HAD TEMPLES BUILT TO HONOR THEM BUT TAWERET WAS MORE A HOUSEHOLD DEITY AND NOT A SPECIFIC DEITY OF THE PHAROAH. HER PICTURE IS OFTEN FOUND ON BEDS AND HEADRESTS, AS DURING SLEEP HER PEOPLE WERE DEFENSELESS. ACCORDING TO THE "EGYPTIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD", SHE IS THE "LADY OF MAGICAL PROTECTION", THE GODDESS WHO GUIDES THE DEAD INTO THE AFTERLIFE, ASSISTING THEM AS THEY ARE 'BORN' INTO ANOTHER REALM OF EXISTENCE.
